Rustic Apple Crisp
Warm spiced apples under a buttery oat topping — a warm and cozy fall dessert, best served straight from the dish.
Ingredients
- 6 cups sliced apples
- 3/4 cup rolled oats
- 1/2 cup flour
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/3 cup butter, cubed
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- Place apples in a greased baking dish.
- In a bowl, mix oats, flour, sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt.
- Add cubed butter and mix until crumbly.
- Sprinkle topping over apples.
- Bake for 35–40 minutes until golden and bubbly.
Serve warm with ice cream. Variations: Fireside — toss 5–6 sliced apples with 2 tbsp sugar and 1 tsp cinnamon, then use a richer topping of 1 cup oats, 1/2 cup flour, 1/2 cup brown sugar, a pinch of nutmeg and 6 tbsp cold butter cut in. Bake 40–45 minutes. Trance Apple Crumble — sweet, shaking, and unforgettable. Thicken the filling with 1 tbsp cornstarch, 1 tbsp lemon juice and 1/3 cup brown sugar, and crown it with 1 cup oats, 3/4 cup flour, 1/2 cup brown sugar and 1/2 cup cold cubed butter. Bake 40–45 minutes, and let it cool slightly before serving.
